Migrating to a new country can seem like a daunting task, even if it’s a nation as welcoming as Canada. The new people, new food, and new customs may all take a while to adjust to but finding a pathway suited to you by which to immigrate might make the process a bit smoother. Therefore, compiled here is a list of 8 different types of immigration to Canada.

Family Class Category

If you are married to a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident who is at least 18 years of age, you can migrate to Canada with a spousal visa. There are, however, certain conditions you’ll need to meet to be eligible for this visa:

  1. You and your spouse must have lived together for 12 months straight
  2. Provide proof that you two have set up a household together

International Student

Apply to a university in Canada. The university needs to be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Once you have been accepted to the university, you can apply for a study permit and study in Canada for 2 years which will make you eligible for a 3-year postgraduate work permit. You can then earn a one-year work experience in Canada, after which you can apply for a permanent residence there.

Express Entry

This is one of the simplest ways to immigrate to Canada. The very first step for you to take with this method is to compute your CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score. The tool that does this can be found on the official website of the government of Canada, cic.gc.ca. You’ll be asked a set of questions and based on your answers your total CRS score will be calculated. Once your score is given, you’ll have to check what the current cut-off score is for immigrants and if your score is higher than the minimum, you’ll get an invitation to apply, which is followed by a set of steps forming express entry.

Provincial Nominee Program

If your CRS score doesn’t meet the threshold, you can always apply for the Provincial Nominee Program or the PNP. This process requires you to get a nomination letter from the province or territory you wish to immigrate to, which will give you an additional 600 points, helping boost your CRS score. To get nominated by a province, you need to apply directly to it on another Canadian government site, Canada.ca.

Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) or  Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program (RNIP)

If your required CRS score still isn’t met by following the above options, you can apply through AIPP or RNIP. In these programs, all you need to do is to find a designated employer in Canada who will employ you.

Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP)

This is another method to opt for if your CRS score does not hold up. Instead of the CRS scores used for Express Entry, QSWP employs selection grid points. Similar to Express Entry, you’ll have to get a certain point to be able to immigrate. This program accepted up to 44, 500 new permanent residents in 2020, and this number is bound to increase over the years.

Business Immigration

This program can be divided into two different teams: self-employed person and start-up visa program. Both these can be found on the official website mentioned earlier: cic.gc.ca.

You’ll need to find your eligibility for both these programs. To be eligible as a self-employed person, you must have proof of having two years of relevant experience and show that you are full of the intention to become self-employed in Canada. You’ll also need to score a minimum of 35 points on a selection grid you can find on the site. This point determines how much you can contribute economically to Canada. These points are determined based on your education, experience, age, English and/ or French fluency, and adaptability.

As for the start-up visa program, you need to have a qualifying business, a letter of support from an authorized organization, meet the language requirements of Canada, and have sufficient money to settle down in Canada before you start making money from your business. This can also be applied on the site cic.gc.ca where there’s a step-by-step guide easy for you to follow.
